Non-Visual SQL Writer v.1.2SW 418 k 13 Jan 2003
By Berend Tober. This 32-bit Windows application allows you to quickly construct and test queries against ODBC databases. It is intended for use by programmers that know how to write SQL statements, but want a tool that helps eliminate a lot of typing yet doesn't hide the statement syntactical details behind a pictorial representation of tables or an E-R like visual presentation.

You can work on developing queries for multiple databases simultaneously in a MDI window environment. On the left of each child window appears a list of tables in the selected ODBC-compliant database source. Immediately to the right of the table list is a list of the columns in the currently-selected table. The columns list updates automatically as the table in focus in the table list is changed.

The Operators list box contains common boolean and arithmetic operators and other key words used to compose SQL statements.

In the Functions group box, six tab pages appear, each containing many commonly used parts of, or templates for, constructing a SQL statement.

You can update and modify the contents of these list boxes to customize and streamline the tool for your style of usage. Double-clicking on any item in any of these list boxes adds the selected element to the SQL statement under construction and displayed at the bottom of the window. When you execute the query, the result set is displayed in a separate, tabular window.

Queries that you run are cached for easy, point-and-click recall, and for each active database, you have a number of useful options on the main menu and context menus, including:

  • Show/hide system tables.
  • Quote database objects when constructing queries.
  • Prepend column names with table name.
  • Request read-only or editable result set.
  • And more...
BDE required.
